Our Story: Turning Baltic Red Seaweed into New Possibilities

Vetik was founded in 2017 around a unique local resource: Furcellaria lumbricalis, a red seaweed growing naturally in the Baltic Sea around Saaremaa. From the beginning, our aim has been to find higher-value applications for this biomass through science and technology.

Our early R&D explored a range of possibilities, from pigments and materials to agricultural applications. Over time, biostimulants emerged as our main focus, leading to the development of SaareNative — a liquid red seaweed biostimulant designed for modern crop production.

Since then, we have moved from laboratory development to greenhouse and field trials, working with growers, researchers and partners across Europe. Our focus today is on validating SaareNative across crops, refining its application and preparing the technology for commercial scale-up.

At the same time, we continue to explore how more value can be created from the seaweed biomass and its side streams. Our ambition is to build a science-based seaweed technology company in Saaremaa with applications reaching well beyond Estonia.
